Golden Nigerian Buns: A Crunchy Taste of Home.



There’s something deeply comforting about Nigerian buns. Unlike puff-puff, Nigerian buns are firmer and crispier, making them perfect for dipping in tea, enjoying with chilled drinks, or simply snacking on at any time of the day. Simple ingredients, big flavour, and pure nostalgia—this is a classic Nigerian treat that never goes out of style.

Nigerian Buns Recipe (Crispy & Delicious)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups plain flour

  • ½ cup sugar (adjust to taste)

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg (optional but traditional)

  • A pinch of salt

  • 1 tablespoon butter or margarine

  • 1 egg

  • ¼–½ cup water or milk (as needed)

  • Vegetable oil (for deep frying)

Method

  1. In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and salt. Mix well.

  2. Add the butter and rub it into the dry ingredients until the mixture looks like fine crumbs.

  3. Beat in the egg, then gradually add water or milk, mixing until you get a thick, sticky dough. The dough should be firmer than puff-puff batter.

  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot over medium heat. The oil should be hot but not smoking.

  5. Scoop small portions of the dough using a spoon or your fingers and carefully drop them into the oil.

  6. Fry on medium heat, turning occasionally, until the buns are deep golden brown and evenly cooked.

  7. Remove and drain on paper towels. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Serving Tip

Enjoy Nigerian buns warm or cold, on their own or with a cup of tea, coffee, or chilled juice. They also pair beautifully with pap (ogi) for a truly traditional experience.
