You notice her before you can explain why. She may be wearing a simple dress, carrying an old handbag or standing quietly at the edge of a crowded room. Yet something about her makes people pause. She seems comfortable in her own skin. She listens without rushing to speak. She moves with purpose. That is elegance and poise: a way of carrying yourself that cannot be bought, borrowed or copied exactly.
Elegance begins with self-respect. It shows in the promises you keep to yourself, the rest you allow yourself and the way you speak about your body when nobody else is listening. A woman does not have to feel confident every morning to treat herself with care. Sometimes poise is simply taking a breath, straightening your shoulders and remembering that you deserve to be in the room.

Take care with the small details that matter to you. Perhaps it is pressed clothing, tidy hair, moisturised hands or a scent that feels unmistakably yours. Perhaps it is arriving prepared, remembering a name or sending a thoughtful message. These habits need not be perfect or elaborate. Their power lies in the attention behind them.
And please, leave room for joy. An elegant woman can laugh loudly, enjoy her food, dance badly and have days when her hair refuses to cooperate. Poise is not a rule against being human. It is the ability to return to yourself amid the noise.
The woman you admire may appear effortless, but her presence was probably shaped by many ordinary choices: to be considerate, to speak honestly, to care for herself and to keep going through difficult seasons.
