A checked coat has a wonderful ability to make a simple outfit interesting. It brings pattern, movement and a little personality before you have added a single accessory. The easiest way to style it is to give it space.
Start with a calm outfit underneath. Cream knitwear and trousers make a checked coat look soft and refined. Black gives it a sharper city feel; dark denim makes it easy enough for the weekend. Choose one colour from the check and repeat it in your bag or boots if you want the whole look to feel connected.
When shopping, look beyond the print you love. Check the shoulder fit and make sure you can wear your favourite jumper beneath it. Walk a few steps and see where the hem falls. A coat needs to work on a real pavement as beautifully as it does in a fitting-room mirror.
You can wear a large check at any size. The question is whether you enjoy the scale and shape on you. If a dramatic coat makes you stand taller, that is useful information. If a subtler pattern feels more like home, follow that instinct instead.
A good checked coat will make outfits you already wear feel exciting again. That is a far better reason to buy it than a trend alone.
