Before You Buy Anything on Black Friday, Take These 7 Photos.

There is a moment during a sale when almost everything begins to look like a good idea. The coat you barely noticed last week suddenly feels essential. A handbag becomes more attractive because the price has fallen, and a countdown on the screen makes an ordinary shopping decision feel urgent. Before you know it, you are building outfits around clothes you have not bought, for occasions you have not planned. A useful way to slow that process is to photograph what you already own before browsing what someone else wants to sell you.

Photograph the Outfit You Actually Wear

Start with an outfit you reach for on an ordinary day. Choose the trousers that feel comfortable after several hours, the shoes you can walk in and the bag that holds what you need. Photograph the complete combination, including your outerwear. This image gives you a reference point when shopping. A dramatic jacket might look beautiful on a model, but will it work with the clothes you regularly wear? Your everyday outfit can help you answer that question more honestly than an imagined version of your lifestyle.

Photograph the Item That Needs Replacing

Next, take a photograph of something that has reached the end of its useful life. Perhaps your boots let in water, your everyday bag has a broken fastening or your favourite trousers have become too worn to repair. Keep this photograph beside a short note describing what the replacement must do. Waterproof footwear, for example, needs to suit your walking habits as well as your wardrobe. A clear requirement makes it easier to recognise a useful purchase when you see one.

Photograph the Clothes You Have Never Worn

Lay out the pieces that still have labels attached or have barely left the wardrobe. Resist the temptation to criticise yourself. Instead, examine what happened. Did you buy a smaller size hoping it would eventually fit? Does the fabric irritate your skin? Is the dress beautiful but difficult to wear with any bra you own? These clothes contain useful information about your shopping habits. If several unworn purchases share the same problem, you have identified something to avoid when the next sale begins.

Photograph Your Shoes and Bags

Shoes and bags often determine whether a new outfit is immediately wearable or becomes the beginning of another shopping list. Photograph your footwear together so you can see the shapes, colours and heel heights available to you. Do the same with your bags. When considering a dress, check whether you already own suitable accessories. If you need new shoes, a different bag and additional underwear to make it work, include those costs in your decision. The price on the product page may represent only part of what you will spend.

Photograph the Fit You Love

Choose a garment that fits particularly well and record its measurements, fabric composition and care label. For trousers, useful measurements might include the waist, rise and inside leg. For a jacket, consider the chest, shoulders and sleeve length. Measure garments consistently and remember that different fabrics behave differently. A fitted stretch dress cannot always be compared directly with a loose woven one. Even so, knowing the measurements of clothes you enjoy wearing provides a stronger starting point than relying on a familiar size number.

Photograph Your Actual Shopping List

Finally, write down the few things that would improve your wardrobe and save the list as an image on your phone. Be specific enough that the list helps you make decisions. “A warm everyday jumper that works beneath my coat” gives you more guidance than “winter clothes.” You can still make room for something unexpected, but pause long enough to explain why you want it and where it belongs.

Before buying, check the final price, delivery charges, return arrangements and care requirements. Ask yourself whether you would still be interested if the discount banner disappeared. A successful sale purchase should feel useful when it arrives, comfortable when you wear it and worthwhile after the excitement has passed.

What is the one item you genuinely need to replace before winter?
