The Polished Man’s Wardrobe Starts Before the Shopping Trip.

A man can wear a recognisable label and still look uncomfortable in his clothes. He can also wear a familiar jumper and trousers and look completely at ease. The difference often comes down to details that shopping cannot automatically solve: how the clothes sit, how they are cared for and whether they belong together.

Begin with fit. Look at the shoulders of your jacket, the length of your sleeves and the way your trousers fall over your shoes. There is no single silhouette every man needs to copy. Relaxed trousers can look considered; a closer fit can too. The useful distinction is between a shape you chose and one you are constantly pulling, hitching or adjusting.

Next, inspect condition. A beautiful knit loses some of its appeal when it is covered in pilling. A good shirt can look neglected when the collar is tired or the creases are accidental. Follow the care label, attend to small repairs and clean your shoes appropriately for their material. These are quiet tasks, but they give the clothes you already own a better chance.

Then simplify one outfit. Try a navy knit with charcoal trousers and dark brown shoes, or an ivory shirt with darker trousers and a jacket. The point is to see how a smaller colour palette feels on you. Once the base works, add something personal: a textured scarf, distinctive glasses or a colour you enjoy.

Texture can create interest without a large logo. A wool jumper beside smoother trousers has a different character from a complete outfit in the same finish. Look at your clothes together in daylight. You may find combinations you have overlooked because you usually reach for the same pairings.

Shoes deserve attention because they help establish the outfit’s mood. Trainers, loafers and boots can all work; choose a pair that suits your plans and feels connected to the clothes above it. There is little value in dressing for an imaginary life while ignoring the one you actually lead.

Looking polished does not require pretending to be wealthier, older or more serious than you are. It means making a few deliberate choices and wearing them comfortably.

What makes the biggest difference to your outfits: fit, colour or shoes?
