President Trump confirms Mike Pence will be his running mate in 2020

U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, August 18th said he would keep Vice President Mike Pence as his running mate when he seeks re-election in November 2020.  

“I’m very happy with Mike Pence,” Trump, who is expected to easily win the Republican nomination for a second term, told reporters before boarding Air Force One in New Jersey.

At the formal launch of his 2020 campaign, Donald Trump vowed to deliver another “earthquake at the ballot box” in 2020, speaking before 20,000 cheering supporters in Orlando, Florida.

Recall LIB reported that Nnamdi Kanu described the attack as a courageous act and also accused the Enugu West Senator of conniving with Governors from the South-East region to proscribe the group.

Update: Court denies suit by Abuja based lawyer seeking to prevent President Buhari from swearing-in ministers over the exclusion of an FCT indigene from cabinet list

The Federal High Court Abuja has refused to grant a request stopping President Buhari from inaugurating the 43 ministerial nominees over the exclusion of an FCT indigene from his cabinet list.  

The applicant, Musa Baba-panya, who was also the counsel in the case, had approached the court with an exparte motion, asking the court to stop the president from going ahead on the inauguration.

In suit number: number: FHC/ABJ/CS/878/19, Baba-panya, who is also an indigene of Karu in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said the president’s action was contrary to an Appeal Court’s judgment delivered on March 15, 2018. President Buhari is the 1st defendant while the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) is the 2nd defendant in the case.

48 hours after Ekweremadu’s attack, German government deports new batch of Nigerian migrants

The German government has deported a new batch of Nigerian migrants barely 48 hours after the attack on former Deputy President of the Senate Ike Ekweremadu, by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).  

According to reports, the migrants left Frankfurt Airport at 8 a.m. on Monday, August 19th and are expected to land in Nigeria’s Murtala Mohammed International Airport between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. The number of migrants deported was not ascertained as at the time of this report, it was however, gathered that they were picked randomly from different accommodation centres.

Last month two batches of Nigerians were sent back home from the European country.

“The flight will be from Frankfurt on Monday. For those who have been given the information, the plane will take off by 8 a.m. and arrive in Nigeria between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. Those who will be deported will be picked randomly from their different accommodation centres from 3 a.m. till 5 a.m. in different regions and conveyed to a central place and finally to Frankfurt Airport,” the Co-ordination Activist for Network Refugees 4Refugees, a political platform for refugees and migrant self-organisation based in Stuttgart, Germany, Rex Osa, told The Nation.

Bayern Munich have confirmed the signing of Philippe Coutinho on a season-long loan from Barcelona in a deal worth £19million.

The Brazilian and former Liverpool midfielder who only moved to the Barcelona in January 2018 found himself surplus to requirements after him his unimpressed performances for the club.

He has now been signed by German champions, Bayern Munich on loan.

Following last night's eviction of Joe and Enkay from the Big Brother Naija house and Ebuka’s chat with the housemates during the Live Eviction Show, Venita stated that she was not happy with the fact that Khafi told others about their 'little misunderstanding'.

This was evident in her conversation with Gedoni where she vented her anger to him and said “If I decided to set my compass on you, she (Khafi) will not stand a chance.”  

Confused and short of words, Gedoni’s solution was to offer Venita a hug which calmed her down a bit, but Venita was not done yet.

Ekweremadu's attack: Nnamdi Kanu offers N1m for Southeast governors’ travel plan, places Chief of Army Staff Tukur Buratai on watchlist

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Mr. Nnamdi Kanu on Sunday August 18, offered a N1 million reward for a leak of the overseas travel plan of Southeast governors.

In his 87 minutes broadcast which centered on the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Germany by members of the group he heads, Nnamdi Kanu warned all Igbo political leaders not to travel out of the country for their own good. Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe was however exempted from the warning. 

“So if you are working in any Government House in Southeast and you know which city in the world your governor is going to be, inform us so that we will mobilise for him and you will be rewarded with N1 million" he said. 

Maurice Iwu meets N1 billion bail, regains freedom after a week in jail

Prof. Maurice Iwu, the former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Friday August 16 met the N1bn bail with two sureties which a Lagos state High Court imposed on him. 

The former Electoral commission boss was admitted to bail of N1bn with two sureties in like sum after being arraigned before Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court in Lagos on August 8.

The Judge ruled that his sureties must have a property in Lagos, while the other must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 16 or a professor in any Nigerian university. They are expected to show evidence of three years’ tax clearance and required to furnish the court with their statements of accounts.

We have not banned food importation - President Buhari

The Presidency has denied claims in the media that President Buhari has banned the importation of food into the country.

Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, gave the clarification in a statement he released on Sunday August 18th while responding to an article by Financial Times with claims that the President had banned food importation.

Recall that President Buhari on August 13th, announced that he has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stop providing foreign exchange for importation of food into the country. Read here. Many took his comment to mean that Food importation has been banned.

However, in his statement released on Sunday, Garba said there was no ban on food importation. According to Garba, importers of the food items are still free to source their forex from non-government financial institutions towards meeting their importations.

Kevin Hart is the highest-earning stand-up comedian of 2019, according to Forbes.  

The 40-year-old actor and comedian earned $59 million between June 1, 2018 and June 1 of this year. He previously topped the Forbes list of highest-paid comedians in 2016. Hart  who holds lucrative sponsorships with Mountain Dew, Chase and other brands, completed a world tour in January, and released a new Netflix special, Irresponsible, in April.  

Jerry Seinfeld earned the No. 2 spot with $41 million. Seinfeld has an upcoming residency show at the Beacon Theatre in New York and continues to receive payments from Hulu for Seinfeld streaming rights.

President Buhari congratulates D’Tigress for defeating Senegal to win 2019 FIBA Afrobasket Championship

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated the Nigeria women national basketball team, D'Tigressafter they emerged champions of the 2019 FIBA Afrobasket Championships in Dakar, Senegal. 

On Sunday, August 18, D’Tigress defeated hosts Senegal at the finals 60-55, and became the first team to win back-to-back FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles.

Ekweremadu Attack: PDP were the main cheerleaders of IPOB and they owe this country an apology - APC

The APC while condemning the shameful assault on former Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu in Nuremberg, Germany says the opposition party, PDP owes the country an apology for its support to IPOB in the past.

In a statement signed by APC's national publicity secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu, the APC said, 'It is clear that PDP and its other shortsighted co-travelers who were the main cheerleaders of IPOB owe this country an apology. IPOB hid under regional identity to perpetrate criminality having recruited some misguided elements and miscreants'.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) strongly condemns the attack on Senator Ike Ekweremadu, immediate past Senate President and serving Senator by members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) on Saturday in Nuremberg, Germany.

Those involved in the despicable actions and the organisation they represent are unworthy in character. No Nigerian should be assaulted in the manner Senator Ekweremadu was.

It is an indecent action and it is below the acceptable standard of behaviour expected of our citizens whether in Nigeria or abroad. It is however regrettable that some of the people and organizations who had offered these irresponsible elements open support in the past are raising their voices now. It would be recalled that the main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its leaders chose to play politics over a matter that called for collective patriotic actions when IPOB raised a terror group in the South East.

Ashley Cole, the most decorated footballer in FA Cup history retires after a two-decade-long career

Ashley Cole, Former England, Arsenal and Chelsea left-back has announced his retirement from playing football following a two-decade-long career.  

38-year-old Cole was out of contract at Derby County at the end of the 2018-19 season and says he is now focused on coaching. Cole said he is currently taking qualifications with a view to move into a coaching role.  

He made his professional debut for Arsenal in 1999 and went on to represent Crystal Palace on loan, Chelsea, Roma, LA Galaxy and Derby.

“After hard thinking, it was time to hang up my boots and look forward to my next chapter,” Cole told Sky Sports.

The London-born defender earned 107 caps for England and is the most decorated footballer in FA Cup history, having lifted the trophy seven times(with Arsenal in 2002, 2003 and 2005, and Chelsea in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012).

$12m fraud: Court appoints attorney to defend Obinwanne Okeke as he fails to show up with a lawyer

Obinwanne Okeke, the CEO of Invictus Group got an attorney with the United States Federal Public Defender in Eastern District of Virginia to defend him after he failed to show up in court with a laywer for the commencement of his trial on two counts of conspiracy to commit computer fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

Kenyan chef breaks Guinness World Record for cooking for longest hours

Maliha Mohammed, a Kenyan Chef based in Mombasa is now the Guinness World Record holder for cooking for the longest hours.

The 36-year-old Chef cooked for 75 straight hours at the Kenya Bay Beach Resort, preparing 400 local and international cuisines. The previous Guinness World Record holder for the category was Rickey Lumpkin, a US-based chef who in 2018 cooked for 68 hours, 30 minutes and 1 second.
