37 FRSC officials arrested for extorting money from motorists on Nigerian highways

A Joint Inter-Agency Team led by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has arrested 37 officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for allegedly extorting money from motorists on Nigerian highways.  

The Team, comprising officials of ICPC, FRSC and the Department of State Security (DSS) also arrested five persons said to be agents of the corps officials in a sting operation carried out simultaneously in the six geo-political zones.

The Igbo community has issued an unreserved apology to senator Ike Ekweremadu and condemned in the strongest terms, the actions of the IPOB members who descended on him.

This was made known by Uche Anichukwu, Special Assistant to Ekweremadu on Media who quoted the group's statement. 

 

Osun State declares public holiday for traditional worshippers

The Osun Government has declared Tuesday, August 20th as a public holiday to mark the 2019 Traditional Worshippers’ Day, also known as ‘’Isese Day.”

Obawale Adebisi, the Supervisor for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Culture and Tourism , announced this on Monday in Osogbo. Adebisi, however, appealed to traditional worshippers to be peaceful and law abiding in their conduct during and after the festive period.  

Nigeria’s population explosion is frightening - Buhari

President Buhari on Monday August 19, expressed fear over Nigeria’s population explosion which he described as "frightening". 

The President told the 43-ministers-designate who will assume office tomorrow to work hand-in-hand to find a solution to the worrisome trend. 

“By average estimates, our population is close to 200 million today. By 2050, UN (United Nations) estimates show that Nigeria will be third globally, behind only India and China with a projected population of 411 million.

“This is a frightening prospect but only if we sit idly by and expect handouts from so-called development partners. The solution to our problems lies within us" he said.

Governor Abdulrazaq locks out Kwara workers over lateness

Some Kwara state civil servants got locked out of the state's secretariat for lateness and poor attitude to work, after Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq paid a surprise visit on Monday August 19. 

The Kwara state Governor in a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye, said he was unhappy that most offices were under lock with a large number of the workers yet to report to duty after he arrived by 7:55a.m. He further disclosed that for over one hour, only a handful were at their offices.

Atiku did not score majority of lawful votes in the February 23 election - INEC tells presidential election petitions tribunal

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has told the presidential election petitions tribunal that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Atiku Abubakar did not score the majority of lawful votes in the February 23 election.  

In a written address filed by its lead counsel, Yunus Ustaz Usman (SAN), INEC said PDP and Atiku could not prove allegations of wrong entry of results in 11 states of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Niger and Zamfara States.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has denied raiding the residence of the immediate past Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode. A statement from the Antigraft agency reads

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has since early hours of today, been inundated with calls that operatives of the Commission raided the residence of the former governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode.

We need to state for the records that the EFCC did not raid Ambode’s house. It is instructive that his administration, like other former governors is under investigation, since they no longer constitutionally enjoy immunity against prosecution.

FIRS boss, Tunde Fowler, is not under investigation- Presidency

The presidency has denied media reports that the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Babatunde Fowler, is under investigation. Fowler was  handed a query letter by the Chief of Staff to President Buhari, Abba Kyari, last week Friday August 16th over variance in the figures of tax collected since he assumed office in 2015.

Fowler was asked to respond to the query by today August 19th. Some Nigerians interpreted the query to mean he was under investigation.

However in a statement released today, the Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said Fowler is not under any investigation. Read the statement below

N3bn fraud: We’re not aware of Oyo-Ita’s alleged retirement - Presidency

The Presidency on Monday August 19, reacted to report from different quarters about the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs. Winifred Oyo-Ita's move to retire from service after being grilled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N3bn fraud. 

Recall that her international and diplomatic passports were seized by the anti-graft agency who are investigating allegation of using front companies to get contracts when she was a permanent secretary, before her appointment as head of service by Buhari in 2015.

Order EFCC to release my $40m jewellery- Diezani Alison-Madueke tells Lagos court

Diezani Alison-Madueke, a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, has filed an appeal at the Federal High Court Lagos for the reversal of an interim order secured by the EFCC for the interim forfeiture of her 2,149 pieces of jewellery and a customised gold iPhone all valued at $40m, seized by the antigraft agency last month.

Recall that on July 5th, the agency secured an interim order to confiscate the former Minister's jewelries and iphone which is believed to be proceeds from acts of corruption perpetrated while she was in office.

In an application filed by her counsel, Professor Awa Kalu, Diezani who is currently in the United Kingdom, accused the EFCC of entering her apartment illegally and taking the items without any court order. She said the anti-graft agency violated her fundamental “right to own property and to appropriate them at her discretion,” under sections 43 and 44 of the Constitution.
