Look through a family or friendship-group holiday album and you may notice someone missing.
The person holding the camera.
They captured the arrivals, the meals, the beach and every carefully arranged group photograph. Their own presence appears in a reflection, a hurried selfie or a single picture taken at the end.
Before your next trip, share the responsibility. Ask someone else to take photographs during part of the day. Be specific about what you would love: a picture walking with your child, laughing with your friends or simply sitting together over breakfast.
Make time for a group photograph while everyone is available. A timer or a carefully positioned phone can help, where it is practical and permitted.
Then take a few ordinary pictures, too. The cards on the table. The windblown hair. The moment everyone started laughing before they were ready.
Ask before posting pictures of other people, and respect anyone who would rather keep them private.
A holiday album can hold beautiful scenery and include the people who made the journey matter.
Including you.
Are you usually in the holiday photographs—or the one taking them?
