Teenage jobseeker steals N108k during interview in Delta state

A teenager has been apprehended after stealing N108,000 during her interview in Delta State.

According to Sapele Oghenek, the young lady was in a company in Palm Avenue Road, Sapele, for an interview when the salesperson at the company stepped out, leaving the suspect alone in the office. The girl allegedly used the opportunity to steal N108k and fled.

Days later, while passing through the street where the office is located, she was recognized and was instantly nabbed and dragged to her house where the remainder of the money was recovered.

After spending two months in jail for insulting President John Magufuli, Mbeya Urban MP Joseph Mbilinyi of opposition party Chadema, has addressed parliament about prisoner rights. Mbilinyi, also known as Sagu, said that some police officers are not performing their investigative duties properly.Dodoma — Mbeya Urban MP Joseph Mbilinyi (Chadema) has advocated for prisoner's rights in Parliament on Tuesday morning, raising concerns regarding transportation hurdles that prisoners face.

Mr Mbilinyi, also known as Sugu, who was released from jail early this month cited an incident whereby prison officials handcuffed inmates as they walked along the streets on their way to court.

"That is not fair, and unsafe for both the prison officials and the inmates. What if the accused are say, accused of robbery and the prison guards take matters in their own hands... ," he questioned, adding that this could be a case of extrajudicial killings.

"Thank you Mr Sugu for advocating for prisons," said the Speaker of the National Assembly Mr Job Ndugai.

"I thank you for asking a question from experience. That was a good example and we take note of your advice," said the Home Affairs minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba as he responded.

Lagos State announces plan to review its Child Rights law to widen the scope of punishable offences and persons

Lagos State Government has disclosed that its Child Rights Law is being reviewed to widen the scope of punishable offences and persons as well as accommodate present-day realities.  

The Permanent Secretary and Solicitor-General Ministry of Justice, Funlola Odunlami, who disclosed this in her office stated that some punishments as stipulated in the law have not served its intended purpose of deterring abusers of children from desisting from such acts, hence the need to review the Child Rights Law.

'Any leader who can’t perform should get out of office' - Obasanjo to President Buhari

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo today said any leader who cannot perform in office by providing leadership should get out of office.  

Obasanjo, who spoke at the Lagos State University, LASU, Convocation lecture in Lagos, Southwest Nigeria said such a leader should not think of seeking re-election but to get out of office.  

The former President, though, did not mention the name of President Muhammadu Buhari in his speech, but his words betrayed him and pointed to the president. Obasanjo spoke on the “Role of tertiary education in promoting social cohesion and peace: Opportunities and Challenges for Nigeria.” He said four needs were basic features anyone leading a country must be ready to bring to fore because they worked together.

Nigeria: Oshiomhole says APC can’t fix ‘destroyed’ Nigeria in three years

Former governor of Edo State and chairmanship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomhole, has stated the his party cannot fix in three years what he claimed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) destroyed in 16 years.

Mr Oshiomhole said this while meeting with the APC caucus of the Senate Tuesday afternoon.

The meeting which initially started behind closed-door was made open to journalists to cover the speeches by Mr Oshiomhole and the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

They went back into closed-door thereafter.

Mr Oshiomole started by stating that his intention for the visit was to seek the lawmakers’ support on his ambition to become the chairman of APC.

CAN urges Nigeria, others to relocate embassies to Jerusalem

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Nigeria and other countries to relocate their embassies from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Samson Ayokunle, CAN President, made this call on Tuesday in Abuja in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Adebayo Oladeji.

Mr Ayokunle, while commending the Israeli government on the 70th anniversary of their country, said the relocation of the capital to Jerusalem was “Special Anniversary Present from the God of the Patriarchs.”

According to him, the declaration made by President Donald Trump on December 6, 2017 was a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy.

The death toll from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has risen to 27, the health ministry said on Tuesday, after a fatality was recorded in a city on the front line of the outbreak.

The death, which involved a person confirmed by lab tests as having the viral disease, occurred in Wangata, a district of Mbandaka, the ministry said in a press release.

So far, there have been 51 cases since the outbreak was declared on May 8, it said. Of these, 28 cases have been confirmed, 21 are probable and two are suspected.

South Africa : Fruit vendor gangster found guilty of killing Cape Town cop

The Western Cape High Court on Tuesday convicted a Dixie Boys gang member of the 2016 murder of City of Cape Town law enforcement officer Ben Koopman.

Koopman drove to his Eerste River home on February 15, 2016, at lunchtime.

Dressed in full uniform, he parked the metro police van in the driveway and went inside.

He and his 18-year-old son later left the house and walked to the van.

Christopher Jantjies and an unknown man walked up to Koopman and exchanged greetings before pouncing.

He was shot in the chest at close range and fell to the ground.

Jantjies kicked him in the face and chest and said: "Ek het gesê ek gaan jou kry" (I told you that I will get you).

The men stole his firearm and hand radio before fleeing.

The 13-year-old boy was taken in the town of Witbank in the eastern province of Mpumalanga while he was playing with two friends near his home. Witnesses said a Toyota Corolla pulled up nearby and the teenager was dragged in and driven away.

“We are investigating a case of kidnapping that happened on Sunday in Witbank. There was a demand that was made that the parents should deposit cash in bitcoins,” the police spokesman Leonard Hlathi said on Tuesday. Local media said the ransom note was left at the scene.“This is a kidnapping … We demand ransom of 15 bitcoins to be paid into the below bitcoin wallet address to secure your child’s safe release – non-negotiable,” the note reportedly read.

A Ugandan man has been arrested by officials of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) for trafficking narcotics.

Bwogo Federick, 53 was arrested on April 25 this year during arrival formalities.

Officials of NACOB say Mr Bwogo was arrested on suspicion he had ingested narcotic substances. A test of his urine confirmed the suspicion.

Two dealers’ nabbed in Northern Region

Police in the Northern Region have arrested two persons in the Bunkrugu District of the Northern Region for the possession of illegal drugs.

The two Majeed Mohammed and Mariam Dramani, were arrested by officers of the Operation Kondanlgou, a sub-regional anti-cross border crime force set up by Ghana and her immediate neighbours.

This practice was exposed by Nkwasi Obim Nebo, a maternal health advocate and humanitarian worker who led a team of PeachAid Medical Initiative medical doctors to the village of Kaida in Gwagwalada on the outskirts of Abuja.

She has been suffering from a case of ruptured appendix not quickly diagonised, thus leading to damage of the intestine and rupture of the stomach into 3 holes, passing out faeces. After intial surgery two holes closed up, but the rem one refuse to close for almost two months now. So surgery is required to close up the remaining one, if not she might pass out suddenly ...God forbid, photographs tell the story.

The wife and six children of Zamfara State commissioner for youth, sports and skills acquisition, Abdullahi Gurbin Bore, were abducted in the early hours of today Tuesday May 22nd. The family of 19-year-old Confidence Nwanma, who was allegedly murdered by her boyfriend, 24-year-old Saliu Ladayo (read here), has declared that the killer boyfriend must marry her corpse in line with the tradition of the family.

Nwanma was allegedly stabbed to death last week by Ladayo in the Oshinle area of Akure, the Ondo State capital, following a disagreement that resulted from Ladayo's cheating ways.

Ladayo said Nwanma got information that he was asking another girl out, so she placed a curse on him that he will never succeed in life if he sleeps with another girl. He asked her to take back the curse but she refused and he stabbed her.

Nigeria Herdsmen Killings: Lagos Catholic bishops to hold peaceful protest on May 22

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, CBCN, has fixed Tuesday, May 22, as a day of protests for Catholic faithful across the country.

The announcement was made by the bishops in the Sunday Bulletin of the church and circulated to all the dioceses of the church in the country last month. The announcement, entitled “Peaceful Demonstration,” read:  

“The CBCN has directed that every Diocese in Nigeria should organise a peaceful demonstration/ rally against the barbaric but intolerable killing of two priests and 17 others by herdsmen last month in Benue State, Date May 22, 2018. Time:10am, as the funeral of the innocent victims would be going on. Details of how this all important solidarity action will take place in our dioceses will be communicated through the parish priests. Every Christian and all men and women of goodwill are hereby called to participate.”
