You love the coat. You love the skirt. Together, something feels unfinished. Often, it is the relationship between the two hemlines.
There is no compulsory coat length for any body type. But looking at your outfit as a complete silhouette can make winter dressing much easier. Before buying anything new, try these three combinations with what you own.
1. Let the coat cover the skirt
A long coat that reaches the skirt hem, or extends beyond it, creates one clear outer shape. This can work particularly well with a straight midi dress and simple boots.
Check the back as well as the front. A flared skirt needs enough room beneath the coat to fall naturally. If the coat compresses it, try leaving the coat open or choose a roomier cut.
2. Make the difference deliberate
A short jacket with a longer skirt can be beautiful because the contrast is obvious. Try a jacket finishing near the waist with a flowing midi skirt. The jacket establishes the upper proportion; the skirt provides movement below it.
If you enjoy waist definition, a shaped jacket may be all you need. A belt is optional, not a requirement.
3. Open the coat to connect the layers
When a mid-length coat cuts across your skirt at an awkward point, wear it open indoors or in suitable weather. A tonal top and skirt underneath can help the eye follow the outfit vertically.
For cold days when the coat needs to stay fastened, test the look with the shoes you actually intend to wear. A boot shaft or contrasting ankle gap can change the effect as much as the coat itself.
Take a full-length photograph at a normal camera height. Compare the three versions, then keep the combination that feels most like you. Proportion is a styling tool, not a rule you have to obey.
Are you a long-coat woman or a cropped-jacket woman?
