Before You Buy New Shoes, Give Your Favourite Pair This Care Check.

A familiar pair of shoes can make an outfit feel finished—until you notice dusty edges, tired laces or a worn heel. Before replacing them, pause for a closer look.

Care will not rescue every shoe, and it should never disguise damage that makes a pair unsafe. But a simple inspection can help you decide what needs cleaning, professional attention or retirement.

Begin with the material

Find the manufacturer’s care guidance. Smooth leather, suede, patent finishes, fabric and synthetic materials need different treatment. A product suitable for one pair may mark another.

Remove loose surface dirt gently using a method appropriate to the material. Test any recommended cleaning or conditioning product on an inconspicuous area first.

Look at the details

Check laces, buckles, stitching, soles and heel tips. Fresh laces can improve the appearance of an otherwise sound shoe. Loose stitching or a worn heel may need a cobbler’s assessment.

If the sole feels slippery, the shoe is unstable or the structure is failing, stop wearing it until you have appropriate advice or a replacement.

Allow shoes to dry properly

If a pair gets wet, follow its care instructions and avoid assuming direct heat will help. Give shoes suitable airflow and drying time before storing them away.

Use correctly sized shoe trees only where appropriate to the shoe. Overstuffing a delicate pair can distort its shape.

Store them where you can see them

A clear shelf makes it easier to spot what needs attention before you are rushing out. Keep care products safely stored and separate from clothes and personal belongings.

Finish by trying the shoes with an outfit you already love. Sometimes the most satisfying wardrobe improvement is making a good existing piece ready to wear again.

Which pair in your wardrobe deserves a little attention this weekend?
