The bedside table is often asked to be a library, charging station, skincare shelf and storage cupboard at once. No wonder it becomes crowded.
A more useful edit starts with your actual evening routine. What do you reach for after getting into bed? What must stay accessible? Keep those answers in mind before you arrange anything for appearance.
Start with the lamp
Place a reading lamp where you can reach the switch comfortably. Choose a shade and brightness that suit your room and reading needs. Keep its base stable and its cable away from your walking route.
If surface space is tight, consider whether an existing wall light can do the job rather than adding another object.
Give small items one home
A shallow dish can hold earrings, a watch or glasses. Choose one with enough room for your belongings so nothing balances precariously on the edge.
Keep medication according to its storage instructions and safely away from children; a decorative tray is not automatically an appropriate place for it.
Make room for water
A glass on a coaster may be more practical than a large decorative carafe. Place it away from electrical items and where you will not knock it over when reaching for the light.
Edit the reading pile
Keep the book you are actually reading nearby. Move the rest to a shelf. A small drawer or basket can hold occasional items without leaving everything on display.
Choose one beautiful surface
Walnut, a washable fabric mat or a simple ceramic tray can introduce warmth without filling the table. If you want flowers, use a small, stable vase with room around it.
Try the arrangement from bed, with the room dimmed. Can you reach what you need? Can you set down your glasses? The most luxurious bedside table is one that makes the end of the day easier.
What is the one item you always keep beside your bed?
